Why use a hydrofuge?

A hydrofuge is one of the most popular and effective means to waterproof a wall and protect it against all kinds of weather conditions. In this article you can read all about the expertise and products Reynchemie offers concerning hydrofuge.

What is hydrophobic?

The terms "hydrophobizing" and "impregnating" are often considered synonymous within the field of façade cleaning. With these techniques, a special water-repellent layer is applied to a stony facade. The hydrofuge is completely absorbed into the pores of the stone and is no longer visible after drying and polymerisation. After the treatment, the treated outer wall will no longer absorb moisture, but will still be able to breathe. The outer wall will thus remain in good condition for longer and protect the house against moisture from outside.

Advantages of hydrophobic treatment

Makes the façade water-repellent

Makes the façade resistant to all kinds of weather: sun, wind, (acid) rain, hail, snow, frost,...

✅ Retains the vapour permeability of the façade

Moisture management and insulation value of the house are improved

Inhibits growth of mosses, algae and fungi

Counteracts all types of efflorescence (lime, salt and soot)

Protects the façade for at least 15 years if properly implemented

Additional benefits of our RC Hydrocream 4:

Do not touch glass

Does not make stains on blue stone

Strong pearl effect

Without solvents

Easy application, no masking work

RC HYDROCREME 4 in its thixotropic form is excellent for hydrophobic treatment of mineral substrates. It can be easily applied in one work step.

Can you put a hydrofuge on any façade?

The substrate to which a hydrofuge can be applied must be absorbent. Dense or hard materials such as granite or basalt are therefore not suitable for hydrofuge. However, hydrophuge is very suitable for the treatment of porous, absorbent mineral building materials such as brick, bluestone, plaster, sandstone, tuff, limestone, washed-out concrete, architectural concrete, etc.

How is a hydrofuge applied?

A hydrofuge should not be used on damaged or frost-sensitive facades. Both the bricks and the pointing must therefore be in good condition. If this is not the case, these problems will have to be solved first.

Depending on the type of hydrofuge, the liquid or cream is applied or sprayed onto the outer wall using a block brush or a sprayer. In most cases, it is necessary to clean the façade first so that the liquid can be absorbed into the pores of the stone.

The great advantage of RC Hydrocream 4 is that masking of windows and doors is not necessary, as it does not make any marks on glass, aluminium or bluestone. Shielding racks from possible spray of the product on nearby cars is also not necessary, as RC Hydrocream 4 as a cream sticks nicely to the treated surface.

After treating the wall, the hydrophuge needs about a day to be fully absorbed into the façade. Since the impregnating agent is colourless and is completely absorbed by the stone, the appearance of the façade is not changed by the hydrophobic treatment.

Range and expertise of Reynchemie

Besides RC Hydrocream 4, Reynchemie also offers hydrofuges in liquid form, solvent-based (for dry substrates) and water-based (for wet substrates). Discover all our hydrophoses here.

For more than 30 years Reynchemie has developed a proven expertise in hydrofuges. The efficiency, vapour permeability and durability over time are demonstrated in WTCB reports, which show that our hydrofuges achieve the highest score A. The hydro fuges of Reynchemie protect the façade for at least 10 years.
